| Thallus rosette-forming to irregularly spreading, loosely attached, to 20 cm wide. Lobes very variable, broad and sparsely incised to linear-laciniate; lobe margins entire to deeply incised, often sorediate. Upper surface glossy or matt, somewhat coriaceous, dark brown to pale yellowish buff to reddish brown when dry, dark slate-blue to blackish when wet, and sometimes with a bluish lilac tinge, smooth to undulate, sorediate; without isidia, maculae or pseudocyphellae. Soredia farinose to coarsely granular, whitish to grey-blue or mauve, in ±linear marginal soralia or in scattered rounded pustular laminal soralia. Medulla white. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface tomentose to margins; tomentum thick, felted, pale to dark chocolate-brown or pale yellow-brown or pinkish or ±glabrous in a narrow marginal and apical zone. Pseudocyphellae white, scattered, rather sparse, sunk in tomentum (best seen towards apices of lobes, ×10 lens). Apothecia not seen in Australian material. CHEMISTRY: 7β-acetoxyhopane-22-ol, hopane-15α,22-diol; traces of tenuiorin and methyl gyrophorate present as variable accessory compounds. |  |

| Occurs in north-eastern Qld, eastern N.S.W., Vic., Tas. and Norfolk Is.; on living and dead wood and shrubs in humid sites in sheltered forest; also occasionally saxicolous. A cosmopolitan species especially common in temperate regions. | ||
