Thallus rosette-forming to irregularly spreading, loosely to closely attached centrally, 5–10 cm wide. Lobes subdichotomously to irregularly branching, 0.5–3 (–5) cm long, 5–10 (–15) mm wide; lobe margins entire, strongly thickened-ridged below, with prominent projecting white pseudocyphellae. Upper surface pale glaucous grey to grey-brown when dry, dark navy-blue to glaucous blue-grey when wet, undulate, irregularly wrinkled to faveolate or scrobiculate, maculate (maculae best seen at lobe margins, ×10 lens), pseudocyphellate; without isidia, phyllidia or soredia. Pseudocyphellae scattered on laminal ridges, rather sparse, white. Medulla white. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface pale whitish buff and glabrous at margins, darkening and tomentose centrally; tomentum thick, dark brown. Pseudocyphellae scattered, minute, white. Apothecia occasional, marginal and laminal, sessile to subpedicellate, 0.5–2 mm diam.; disc pale orange-brown to red-brown, matt, epruinose; exciple pale buff-brown, verrucose-scabrid; epithecium pale yellow-brown; hymenium colourless. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 1–3-septate, (25–) 28–30.5 (–33.5) × 8.5–11 µm, pale yellow-brown to red-brown. CHEMISTRY: 7β-acetoxyhopane-22-ol, hopane-7β,22-diol (trace) and hopane-15α,22-diol. | ||
A very rare species known in Australia only from the type collection. Also in Papua New Guinea. | ||
