Thallus irregularly palmate from a basal holdfast, 1–2 (–6) cm wide at apices, firmly attached by a root-like holdfast; lobes connected to holdfast by a blackened terete stalk 2–10 mm tall and 2–5 mm diam. Lobes irregularly polyphyllous, occasionally ±monophyllous, 5–10 (–15) mm wide, ±rounded at apices to somewhat lacerate-laciniate, canaliculate, inrolled; secondary ±reniform stalked lobules sometimes developing from margins; margins rounded, entire to notched or incised, conspicuously thickened-ridged at broad apices, noticeably down-rolled. Upper surface pale to dark grey-brown or olivaceous-glaucous when dry, dark slate-blue to blue-black when wet, smooth, matt, undulate, wrinkled, ridged close to holdfast, punctate-impressed or irregularly dimpled elsewhere, isidiate, maculate, without phyllidia or soredia. Isidia dark blue-grey to blackened, minute, granular to coralloid, densely crowded in thick lines at apices and margins or in discrete patches on upper surface, occasionally covering lamina in a dark diffract crust. Maculae minute, white. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface irregularly wrinkled-ridged, costate above holdfast, whitish, glabrous, glossy at margins, pale to dark brown and velvety tomentose centrally. Cyphellae prominent, scattered, pin-prick-like, 0.1–0.3 mm diam.; margins pale, swollen, wider than central pore; pit membrane white. Apothecia not seen.

Primarily an epiphyte of humid lowland and montane rainforest in eastern Qld and N.S.W.; also grows on shaded rocks, in the crowns and at the bases of forest trees and on rotting stumps at 100–1140 m. Also in Norfolk Is. and probably more widely in the western Pacific.
