Thallus adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes moderately imbricate, subirregular to sublinear, 2.5–5 mm wide; margins with moderately dense, distinctly inflated, bulbate cilia. Upper surface pale grey to grey-brown, flat, shiny, faintly to distinctly white-maculate, continuous; isidia dense, simple or branched. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to mid-brown; rhizines moderately dense, simple, pale to dark brown. Apothecia rare, sessile, 1–3 mm wide; thalline exciple ecoronate. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 7–14 × 5–8 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bacilliform to weakly bifusiform, 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and salazinic acid. | ||
Scattered on rock or on bark on mangroves and trees in coastal rainforests in northern N.S.W. and Qld; a pantropical species, particularly common in open secondary forests in Africa, Central and South America, Japan, Hawaii, India, West Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. | ||
