Bulbothrix microscopica Elix

  Thallus adnate to tightly adnate, to 1–2 cm wide. Lobes sublinear, subdichotomously branched, 0.1–0.5 mm wide; margins with dense bulbate cilia; cilia shiny, strongly inflated. Upper surface grey, flat, shiny, emaculate, continuous; isidia moderately dense to dense, simple, less than 0.15 mm high. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, black; rhizines moderately dense to dense extending to margins, simple or tufted, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid (major) and consalazinic acid (minor).
     
  An apparently rare, endemic species occurring on the bark of mangroves in southern Qld; currently known only from the type collection.
