Thallus adnate, to 5–8 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, subirregular, 2–4 mm wide; apices rotund. Upper surface pale grey, smooth, becoming irregularly rugose towards centre, without isidia; pustulate-sorediate, pustules coalescing in coarsely sorediate mass on older portions of thallus. Medulla white. Lower surface black, with brown zone at margins; rhizines sparse, simple, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, either C-, KC- or C+ rose, KC+ rose, P+ orange-red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, protocetraric acid (major), ±gyrophoric acid and unidentified fatty acids. | ||
Common, occurs on both rock and bark of trees in open drier areas of tropical Australia (N.T. and Qld) and south to the N.S.W. border; also in Lord Howe Is. It also occurs in Central America and the Caribbean. | ||
