| Thallus adnate, to 1–3 cm wide. Lobes crowded, imbricate, subirregular, 1–2 mm wide, apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey, smooth or obscurely pitted, becoming rugose, lacking soredia, pustules and isidia; smooth and shiny at lobe apices. Medulla white. Lower surface ivory to pale brown, with pale brown marginal zone; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple or tufted at tips, concolorous. Apothecia common, sessile, 0.5–2 mm wide; disc concave, becoming flattened, epruinose, chestnut-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thin, entire, smooth. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 7–9 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia numerous. Conidia bacilliform, 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, lecanoric acid (major), orsellinic acid (trace) and unidentified compound (trace). |  |
