Thallus loosely adnate, to 6–14 cm wide. Lobes 5–18 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey, after long storage becoming light tan or brownish, sometimes slightly convex; pseudocyphellae abundant, laminal, punctiform, rarely exceeding 0.5 mm; soralia marginal, dense; soredia farinose. Lower surface black; margins rarely punctate, chestnut-brown or concolorous with upper surface; rhizines sparse, black. Apothecia not seen. (Culberson & Culberson (1968) report apothecia to be 1–7 mm wide, imperforate. Ascospores 12–15 × 7–10 µm). Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ pink or red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, olivetoric acid (major), anziaic acid (trace), 4-O-demethylmicrophyllinic acid (trace), and unidentified compounds (trace). | ||
In Australia this species is known from a single collection, on bark, from south-eastern Qld (type collection of P. nitescens); also occurs in North America, Europe, south-western China, Taiwan and Japan. | ||
