Thallus adnate, thick, leathery, to 4–12 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, 2–5 mm wide; laciniae narrower, overlying marginal lobes; margins crenulate; apices irregularly rotund or subrotund. Upper surface green to yellow-green, flat, smooth at marginal lobes, becoming slightly rugulose towards thallus centre, matt, lacking dactyls and isidia; soralia sometimes developing from cracks or pustules which burst to form granular soredia. Medulla white in upper part, yellow-orange in lower part. Lower surface jet black; rhizines sparse, simple or tufted. Apothecia sessile, 2–5 mm wide; disc strongly concave, dull, dark cinnamon-brown; thalline exciple pustulate-sorediate. Ascospores 19–21 × 8–9 µm. Pycnidia rare, punctiform. Conidia weakly bifusiform, 4–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P+ red; pigmented lower medulla K+ purple; containing usnic acid, protocetraric acid (major), euplectin (in pigmented medulla) and ±atranorin. | ||
Common, endemic, found on rock and trees in eastern Australia (Qld and N.S.W.); also in Lord Howe Is. and Norfolk Is. | ||
