| Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, to 5–13 cm wide. Lobes often crowded, sublinear, dichotomously to subirregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; margins entire. Upper surface whitish grey, flat to slightly convex, shiny, continuous, emaculate, pustulate, without isidia; pustules subapical, erumpent, eroding and becoming coarsely granular-sorediate and exposing black lower cortex. Medulla white. Lower surface moderately rhizinate; rhizines richly dichotomously branched, shiny. Apothecia rare, sessile, 2–7 mm wide. Ascospores 9–11 × 5–8 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ orange, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, barbatic acid (major), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (submajor), obtusatic acid (trace) and norobtusatic acid (trace). | ||
