| Thallus loosely to moderately adnate, to 2–4 cm wide. Lobes contiguous to subimbricate, ±flat, short and rounded to slightly elongate, 2–3 mm wide. Upper surface pale olive to olive-brown, smooth and shiny at periphery, dull elsewhere, weakly rugose and developing scattered lobules, lacking soredia and isidia; bearing sparse to somewhat dense cortical hairs, especially on lobe apices; with small whitish pseudocyphellae visible on most lobes, but inconspicuous and easily confused with maculae. Lower surface dark brown to black; rhizines moderately dense, simple, dark brown to black. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia common. Conidia fusiform, rarely bifusiform, 5.5–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3-: medulla K-, C+ rose, KC+ rose-red, P-; containing gyrophoric acid, 5-O-methylhiascic acid and unidentified compounds (traces). | ||
