Melanelia subglabra (Räsänen) Essl.

  Thallus loosely to moderately adnate, thin, to 1.5–7 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, rather short, broadly rounded, 1.5–6 mm wide. Upper surface pale olive-brown to reddish brown, without cortical hairs, dull to rather shiny, smooth to finely pitted or rugose at lobe apices, rugose centrally, lacking pseudocyphellae and isidia, sparsely to densely sorediate; soralia laminal and/or marginal, punctiform to strongly capitate or slightly labriform, occasionally coalescing; soredia granular or rarely isidioid, white to grey-green or slightly brownish. Lower surface pale tan to black; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple, concolorous or pale. Apothecia rare, shortly pedicellate, c. 1 mm wide; disc concave; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores 14–18 × 8–10 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3-: medulla K-, C+ rose, KC+ rose-red, P-; containing gyrophoric acid, 5-O-methylhiascic acid and unidentified compounds (traces).
     
  Occurs on bark, and on mosses growing over bark and rock in the Nothofagus-Tasmannia forests of Tas.; also occurs in Vic. and South America.
