  Thallus adnate, firm, to 8–15 cm wide. Lobes contiguous, subirregular, usually turning up at margins, apically subrotund, 3–7 mm wide. Upper surface pale greenish to brownish grey, shiny, becoming white-pruinose at lobe apices, smooth becoming rugose-foveolate, white maculate, reticulately fissured only in older parts, without isidia; pseudocyphellae mainly marginal, effigurate, few, small, punctiform; soralia linear along lobe margins, very rarely orbicular on lamina. Lower surface moderately to densely rhizinate; rhizines simple to squarrosely branched, 1–2 mm long. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 4–15 mm wide; disc concave; thalline exciple rugose, pseudocyphellate. Ascospores 11–15 × 6–9 µm. Pycnidia rare, marginal. Conidia bacilliform, 5.5–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid (major), consalazinic acid (minor) and ±lobaric acid.
     
  Scattered in cooler areas of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.), as well as Macquarie Is.; also occurs in New Zealand, southern South America and the Falkland Is. Grows on bark, less commonly on rock.
