Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, rather firm, to 8–20 cm wide. Lobes crowded to imbricate, sublinear, rather short, 2–5 mm wide. Upper surface greenish to whitish grey, shiny, maculate, becoming strongly foveolate, continuous to irregularly cracked with age, without isidia; pseudocyphellae laminal and marginal, effigurate, discrete, forming ridges, soon becoming sorediate; soralia along ridges. Lower surface densely rhizinate; rhizines becoming densely squarrosely branched, to 1 mm long. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 2–6 mm wide; disc concave; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores 11–14 × 6–8 µm. Pycnidia poorly developed. Conidia bacilliform, 6–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid (major) and consalazinic acid (minor). | ||
Uncommon on subalpine rock in south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T. Tas.) and Macquarie Is. A cosmopolitan species occurring on all continents and New Zealand. Grows on rock and bark. | ||
