Thallus adnate, to 2–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, variable, sublinear-elongate to subirregular and apically rounded, sometimes subdichotomously branched, 1–3 mm wide; cilia sparse to moderately dense, 0.1–0.5 mm long, black. Upper surface pale grey to greenish grey, flat to convex, shiny, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; isidia moderately dense to dense, cylindrical, erect, often branched, less than 0.5 mm high. Medulla white. Lower surface black; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia very rare, sessile, 1–4 mm wide; disc concave; thalline exciple isidiate. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, 9–13 × 5–8 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia cylindrical, 3–4 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, lecanoric acid (major) and, rarely, traces of orsellinic acid. | ||
Very common on bark and wood, less common on rock in coastal and hinterland areas of southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. (Bass Strait)). Also occurs in New Zealand. | ||
