Thallus adnate to tightly adnate, to 2–4 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, generally narrow, occasionally more robust, 1–3 mm wide; margins sinuous; cilia sparse, 0.1–0.3 mm long, black. Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, flat, shiny, emaculate, smooth or weakly foveolate at first, becoming rugulose, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins shiny, black. Upper medulla white; lower medulla yellow-orange. Lower surface black; lobes with a narrow, brown, naked marginal zone; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia common, sessile to subpedicellate, 1–4 mm wide; disc concave; thalline exciple thin, entire, not crenulate or inflexed, smooth. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal to subglobose, 9–13 × 7–9 µm. Pycnidia numerous. Conidia bacilliform to weakly fusiform, 7–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; white medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-; pigmented medulla K+ purple; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, lecanoric acid (major) and euplectin. | ||
