  Thallus adnate, to 4–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, variable, sublinear-elongate to subirregular and apically rounded, irregularly branched, 1–5 mm wide; cilia sparse, 0.1–0.15 mm long, black. Upper surface olive-grey to grey, flat, shiny or rather waxy, smooth to rugose, foveolate, indistinctly maculate or with distinct white maculae, without isidia; soralia laminal, rarely marginal, originating from coarse pustular ridges, spreading over thallus, white or yellowish, becoming grey-brown. Medulla white. Lower surface black; lobes with a narrow, brown, naked marginal zone; rhizines dense, simple, black. Apothecia rare, sessile, 2–5 mm wide; disc concave; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 11–14 × 5–7 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bacilliform, 4–5 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and lecanoric acid (major).
     
  Common and widely distributed on bark, wood and, more rarely, rock, in eastern and southern Australia (W.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.). Also occurs in Macquarie Is., New Zealand, the Auckland Is. and Chile.
