Thallus adnate, to 3–7 cm wide. Lobes contiguous, sublinear-elongate, subdichotomously branched, 1–3 mm wide; cilia irregularly dispersed, mostly simple, to 0.7 mm long. Upper surface whitish to pale greenish grey, flat to convex, shiny, emaculate, smooth, without soredia and pustules; isidia moderately dense to dense, cylindrical, erect, often branched, to 0.5 mm tall, eciliate. Medulla white. Lower surface black; rhizines moderately dense, shiny, simple or sparingly furcate, black. Apothecia very rare, sessile, 1–4 mm wide; disc concave, entire; thalline exciple isidiate. Ascospores 12–17 × 8–10 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia cylindrical, 3–4 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ rose (pale red), KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, gyrophoric acid (major), umbilicaric acid (minor), 5-O-methylhiascic acid (minor), 3-methoxy-2,4-di-O-methylgyrophoric acid (trace) and 2,4,5-tri-O-methylhiascic acid (trace). | ||
Scattered on bark and rock in moist forests (S.A., Qld and N.S.W.). This cosmopolitan species has been reported from all continents except Antarctica; in Australasia also occurs in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. | ||
