Thallus adnate, fragile, to 2–6 cm wide. Lobes sparingly imbricate, sublinear, irregularly to subirregularly branched, 0.5–2 mm wide; cilia distinct, evenly dispersed, simple, c. 0.5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to pale olive-grey, flat, shiny, emaculate, smooth, densely pustulate-isidiate; pustules laminal, bursting open, not or sparingly sorediate. Medulla partly pale yellow. Lower surface smooth, shiny, black; rhizines moderately dense, simple or furcate, c. 0.1–0.2 mm long, black. Apothecia very rare, sessile, 1–3 mm wide; disc concave, entire; thalline exciple pustulate. Ascospores 12–14 × 7–8 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia cylindrical, 3–4 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ rose, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, gyrophoric acid (major), 5-O-methylhiascic acid (minor) and umbilicaric acid (minor). | ||
Scattered on bark in eastern Australia (Qld and N.S.W.). A common pantropical species; in the Australasian region it also occurs in Norfolk Is., New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. | ||
