| Thallus loosely adnate, coriaceous, to 6–10 cm wide. Lobes rounded, 10–30 mm wide, lacking laciniae; margins entire or crenate, eciliate, sinuate, often ascending. Upper surface pale grey, ash grey, or grey-green, weakly maculate, sometimes distinctly maculate especially in thallus centre, ±rugose and reticulately cracked, without isidia; soralia marginal and submarginal, linear; soredia granular. Medulla white. Lower surface black, with a white, brown, or mottled erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, unevenly distributed, short. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, to 10 mm wide; disc perforate or imperforate; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores 12–20 × 7–10 µm. Pycnidia uncommon. Conidia filiform, 10–14 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and lecanoric acid. | ||
| Common on bark of trees, and, more rarely, on rock, in moist subtropical and tropical areas of Qld; also in N.S.W. and Lord Howe Is. A widespread species in tropical and temperate regions. | ||
