Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, to 6–15 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, rounded to subirregular, often laciniate or dissected, 6–10 mm wide; margins entire, sinuous; cilia moderately dense, simple, 1–2 mm long. Upper surface pale grey, finely maculate, maculae fissuring into cracks, cracks becoming reticulate, areolae not flaking off, without soredia and dactyls. Lower surface with a narrow, erhizinate marginal zone 1–2 mm wide on the marginal lobes; rhizines dense, simple or squarrosely branched. Apothecia laminal, subpedicellate, 4–8 mm wide; disc consistently perforate in older fruits, concave or becoming ±flat, brown; thalline exciple entire becoming lacerate, smooth or rugose, maculate near margin. Ascospores 13–15 × 7–9 µm. Pycnidia common at lobe margins. Conidia filiform, 10–14 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, KC+ red, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid (major) and consalazinic acid (minor). | ||
Grows on bark and rock in W.A., Qld, Tas. and Lord Howe Is.; a pantemperate-pansubtropical species known from North and South America, Hawaii and southern Africa. | ||
