  Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, membranaceous to coriaceous, to 5–13 cm wide. Lobes subirregular, 5–10 mm wide, without laciniae; margins entire; cilia apical, 2–5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; isidia cylindrical, becoming coralloid branched, fragile, eciliate. Medulla white. Lower surface black, erhizinate in a broad zone along margins; rhizines sparse, simple, short, brown. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia uncommon. Conidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ bright yellow, C-, P+ orange-red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, stictic acid (major), constictic acid (major), cryptostictic acid (trace), menegazziaic acid (trace) and norstictic acid (trace).
     
  Grows on bark and wood in southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.). This cosmopolitan species is widespread throughout tropical and temperate areas; in Australasia it also occurs in New Zealand, Norfolk Is., Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
