| Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous to coriaceous, to 8–15 cm wide. Lobes rounded, 8–20 mm wide; margins entire or crenate, sinuate, often ascending; cilia moderately dense to dense, conspicuous, coarse or slender, 2–5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, emaculate or faintly maculate, more rarely distinctly maculate, irregularly cracked towards centre, without isidia; soralia marginal and submarginal; soredia granular. Medulla white. Lower surface black to margins, or with a brown or mottled, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines unevenly distributed, sparse, simple, short. Apothecia rare, sessile, 1–2 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple eciliate. Ascospores 15–19 × 7–10 µm. Pycnidia uncommon. Conidia shortly filiform, 10–14 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ intense red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and lecanoric acid. | ||
