Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, coriaceous, to 3–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or subascending at margins, irregular, 5–20 mm wide; margins entire or weakly crenate; apices rotund; main lobes eciliate; lateral lobes and lobe axils eciliate or sparingly ciliate; cilia 0.5–1.5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey, dull, emaculate, continuous, without isidia; soralia mainly marginal on lateral lobes; sorediate lobes ±ascending; soredia granular. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, shiny, black, with a broad, brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, coarse, short, c. 0.1–0.2 mm long. Apothecia very rare, laminal, sessile, to 3 mm wide; disc imperforate, concave, brown; thalline exciple thick. Ascospores 25–30 × 13–15 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange-red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid (major) and ±consalazinic acid (minor). | ||
A common species in coastal and hinterland areas of eastern Australia (Qld); a cosmopolitan species that is widespread throughout tropical and subtropical areas. Grows on bark and, very rarely, on rock. Also found on Christmas Is,, Lord Howe Is. and Norfolk Is. | ||
