Parmotrema defectum (Hale) Hale | ||

Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, coriaceous, 5-10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate to centrally contorted, irregular to sublinear, rounded, (3-)5-10 mm wide; margins subascending, sinuate, entire to jagged or ±incised, eciliate. Upper surface pale grey or pale grey-brown, dull, smooth at first then becoming rugose and developing cracks centrally, sorediate; soralia marginal to subcapitate or subpustulate; developing into granular soredia. Medulla white. Lower surface black, rhizinate with a naked, brown zone at lobe margin, 3-4 mm wide; rhizines black, simple, sparse to moderately dense. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia laminal at lobe margins, sparse. Conidia filiform, 14-17 x 1-1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, lecanoric acid (major) and trace unknowns. | ||
Parmotrema defectum is a saxicolous species, previously reported from East and South Africa (Hale, 1965). On Lord Howe Island it was collected on exposed basalt outcrops. | ||
