| Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous, to 8–10 cm wide. Lobes crowded and imbricate in centre, irregular, 5–15 mm wide; margins crenulate; lobules at apices, subdigitate, revolute, occasionally terete, minute, 0.5–1 mm wide, erhizinate; cilia in lobe axils, sparse, 0.5–2 mm long, black. Upper surface pale grey, emaculate, rugose towards centre, lacking soredia and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, black, with a broad, brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines abundant, simple or commonly dichotomously branched. Apothecia common, pedicellate, 5–25 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple thin, lobulate-isidiate in part, rugose. Ascospores 23–37 × 12–20 µm. Pycnidia common, punctiform. Conidia bacilliform, 6–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY:cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, stictic acid (major), constictic acid, cryptostictic acid, hypostictic acid (trace) and unidentified compound (trace). | ||
