Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, coriaceous, to 4–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, rounded, 8–15 mm wide; margins subascending, irregular, crenate, irregularly incised or sublaciniate, eciliate or rarely sparingly ciliate; cilia 0.2–0.5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey, dull, emaculate, becoming rugose, continuous or cracked, lacking isidia; soralia marginal, linear along margins to subcapitate on somewhat revolute lobes or short marginal laciniae, sometimes spreading submarginally; soredia granular. Medulla white. Lower surface rugose, black, with a broad, brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, slender, c. 0.1–0.2 mm long. Apothecia rare, laminal, sessile, 2–3 mm wide; disc imperforate, concave, dark brown; thalline exciple thick, eciliate, sorediate. Ascospores 18–22 × 8–10 µm. Pycnidia rare, punctiform. Conidia sublageniform, 6–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ dingy yellow then pale brown, C-, P+ orange-red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, protocetraric acid (major) and with or without unidentified fatty acids (minor). | ||
Scattered on bark of trees in Qld, extending also to Christmas Is., Lord Howe Is. and Norfolk Is. This pantropical species is also known from Africa, South America and Papua New Guinea. | ||
