| Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous or, rarely, somewhat coriaceous, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes rotund, 3–12 mm wide; margins ascending, crenate to isidiate; cilia common, slender, 2–4 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, dull, emaculate, foveolate or weakly rugose; cortex fragile, isidiate or sorediate-isidiate, especially near lobe margins; isidia eventually becoming granular and sorediate, at maturity densely coralloid-branched and ciliate; soredia granular. Medulla white, with patches of a yellow-brown to orange-brown, K+ purple pigment (skyrin) in lower medulla. Lower surface black, with a broad, dark brown marginal zone; rhizines in scattered groups, simple, slender, long. Apothecia very rare, pedicellate, 3–5 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores 16–22 × 10–14 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ red, P-; pigmented medulla K+ purple; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, alectoronic acid, a-collatolic acid, unidentified compounds (minor/trace) and skyrin (in the pigmented medulla). | ||
| A widespread species on bark of trees in moist forests of eastern Australia (Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.), rarely growing on rock in similar locations; also occurs in North, Central and South America, East Africa, India, Japan, the Canary Is., St Helena and New Zealand. | ||
