Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, dull, emaculate, foveolate or weakly rugose; cortex fragile, isidiate or sorediate-isidiate, especially near lobe margins; isidia eventually becoming granular and sorediate, at maturity densely coralloid-branched and ciliate; soredia granular. Medulla white, with patches of a yellow-brown to orange-brown, K+ purple pigment (skyrin) in lower medulla. Lower surface black, with a broad, dark brown marginal zone; rhizines in scattered groups, simple, slender, long.
