| Thallus loosely to moderately adnate, coriaceous, to 5–8 cm wide. Lobes irregular, deeply divided, 3–8 mm wide, developing numerous laciniae; laciniae sublinear, dichotomously branched, 1–1.5 mm wide; lobes and laciniae with cilia 1–2 mm long. Upper surface pale grey-green, faintly to distinctly maculate, often becoming cracked, lacking isidia; soralia labriform at apices of laciniae; soredia farinose. Medulla white. Lower surface black in centre, with a white or mottled, erhizinate, marginal zone which is more prominent on laciniae; rhizines in centre of thallus, sparse, simple, short. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ yellow then orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, norstictic acid, galbinic acid, salazinic acid and with or without unidentified fatty acid. | ||
