Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, leathery, to 5–12 cm wide. Lobes subirregular, irregularly branched, 1–4 mm wide, apically subrotund; cilia moderately dense to dense, becoming furcate, coarse, 0.5–1 mm long, black. Upper surface pale grey, flat, shiny, densely white-maculate, smooth to minutely pitted, without isidia; soralia orbicular, c. 0.5 mm wide, separate or coalescing into extensive laminal sorediate areas. Lower surface black; rhizines dense, with coarse and fine rhizines intermixed, simple to sparsely furcate. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing atranorin and chloroatranorin. | ||
Rare in northern inland N.S.W.; also occurs in South America and southern Africa. Grows on bark. | ||
