Thallus adnate, coriaceous, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes rounded, 4–8 (–10) mm wide; margins entire or crenate, eciliate, suberect and sorediate. Upper surface pale grey, dull, emaculate, smooth, becoming slightly rugose and cracked in older parts, lacking isidia; soralia marginal, linear to crescent-shaped, sometimes becoming submarginal and punctiform to subcapitate. Medulla white. Lower surface black, with a mottled, ivory or brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, short. Apothecia rare, pedicellate, 4–10 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple rugose, sorediate. Ascospores 15–21 × 7–10 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia sublageniform, 7–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, protopraesorediosic acid (major), praesorediosic acid (major) and unidentified fatty acids (minor). | ||
A very common species in tropical Australia, in fairly dry, open sites (W.A., N.T. and Qld); also occurs in eastern and southern Africa, North, Central and South America, India, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java), Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Fiji. Grows on bark and rock. | ||
