Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous, to 10–20 cm wide. Lobes rotund, 10–15 mm wide; margins entire, ciliate; cilia sparse, 0.5–1.5 mm long, sometimes only sparsely developed and only in lobe axils. Upper surface grey, smooth, dull, faintly maculate at margins, becoming reticulate-cracked centrally with age, without isidia; soralia marginal, short, linear on small incised marginal laciniae, sorediate laciniae becoming convolute; soredia granular. Medulla white. Lower surface black, with a wide, flat, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, in centre of thallus, simple, black. Apothecia rare, pedicellate, 3–5 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple sorediate, faintly maculate. Ascospores 18–22 × 8–10 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ dingy yellow becoming dirty brown, C-, P+ orange-red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, protocetraric acid (major) and with or without unidentified fatty acid. | ||
A scattered species on bark of trees in temperate rainforests of eastern Australia (Qld, N.S.W. and Vic.); also known from southern Europe, the Canary Is. and New Zealand. | ||
