Thallus loosely adnate, coriaceous, to 8–15 cm wide. Lobes rotund, broad, 5–10 mm wide; older lobes broadly convoluted and saccate; margins smooth, entire, eciliate. Upper surface grey to ash-grey, dull, emaculate, becoming reticulately cracked, esorediate; isidia moderately dense, cylindrical, simple to branched, 0.1–0.3 mm high. Medulla white. Lower surface black, erhizinate in a broad zone at margins; rhizines sparse, simple, brown. Apothecia rare, sessile, 5–8 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple smooth or becoming isidiate. Ascospores 22–26 × 12–16 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ red-brown, P+ brick-red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and protocetraric acid (major). | ||
A scattered species in Australia, occurring on bark of trees in coastal woodland and hinterland montane forests in N.T. and Qld, and Norfolk Is.; also occurs in India, Taiwan, Singapore, Fiji, the Marshall Is. and Henderson Is. | ||
