Thallus loosely adnate to adnate, membranaceous to coriaceous, to 3–10 cm wide. Lobes irregular, 5–15 mm wide; margins crenate, often deeply divided and ascending; apices rotund; cilia moderately dense to dense, conspicuous, simple or bifurcate, slender, 1–3.5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to pale grey-green, dull, emaculate, rugose towards thallus centre, without isidia; soralia mainly marginal, linear, sometimes spreading submarginally; soredia farinose. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, shiny, black, with a broad, brown or mottled, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines dense, simple, slender, to 2 mm long. Apothecia rare, sessile, 3–10 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores 13–18 × 7–10 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia weakly sublageniform, 6–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ pale red, KC+ pale red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, gyrophoric acid (major) and ±lecanoric acid (trace). | ||
A common and widespread pantropical species; in Australia scattered in hinterland areas of north Qld, and on Norfolk Is.; also known from Central and South America, eastern and southern Africa and Papua New Guinea. Grows on bark. | ||
