| Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous, to 7–15 cm wide. Lobes rotund, 7–15 mm wide, often becoming crowded, convoluted and obscured by lobules; margins crenate or becoming lobulate-laciniate; laciniae usually canaliculate, suberect; lobes and laciniae moderately ciliate; cilia conspicuous, 1–3 mm long. Upper surface grey, shiny, weakly white-maculate or emaculate, smooth to rugulose, lacking soredia and isidia. Medulla white, orange-red near lower cortex. Lower surface black, sparsely rhizinate at centre, brown to ivory in a broad erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines simple. Apothecia common, pedicellate, 6–12 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple often shortly dentate-laciniate, ciliate, heavily rugose, distinctly white-maculate. Ascospores 26–34 × 12–18 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bacilliform, 4–5 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY:cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ red, P-; pigmented medulla K+ purple; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, alectoronic acid (major), a-collatolic acid and skyrin (in pigmented medulla). | ||
| A scattered species in coastal and hinterland forests of Qld; also known from Central and South America, southern Africa and China. Grows on bark. | ||
