| Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes rounded, 5–15 mm wide; margins crenate; cilia simple or rarely branched, 0.2–2 mm long. Upper surface grey-green, distinctly white-maculate, irregularly cracked, lacking soredia; isidia dense, laminal, cylindrical, simple or branched, thin, rarely ciliate. Lower surface shortly rhizinate for the most part, but sometimes papillate to the margins, brown to black in centre, lobe margins brown; short rhizines dense, simple, 0.1–0.3 mm long; long rhizines coarse, 1–1.5 mm long. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 5–8 mm wide; disc imperforate, brown to dark brown; thalline exciple isidiate. Ascospores 8–11 × 5–8 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, norlobaridone, salazinic acid and ±usnic acid (trace). | ||
| This common species is widespread in temperate and tropical areas of eastern Australia (Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.); also occurs in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Indonesia (Sumatra) and New Zealand. Grows on bark. | ||
