| Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous to coriaceous, to 10–30 cm wide. Lobes irregular, 10–20 mm wide; margins entire or crenate, eciliate; apices rotund. Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, shiny, becoming dull towards thallus centre, emaculate, without soredia; cortex sometimes cracking and flaking; isidia sparse to abundant, laminal and eventually marginal, confluent or in scattered groups, simple or branched, thin and cylindrical or coarse and irregularly inflated, rarely ±interspersed with lobules, brown-tipped or concolorous. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, shiny, black, with a broad, brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, coarse, short, c. 0.5–2 mm long. Apothecia very rare, laminal, subpedicellate, 8–20 mm wide; disc imperforate or with a small perforation, concave or ±radially split, dark brown; thalline exciple thick, isidiate. Ascospores 13–15 × 7–8 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia filiform, 12–16 × 1–1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, lecanoric acid (major) and orsellinic acid (trace). | ||
| Common on rock and trees in moister areas of Australia (W.A., Qld, N.S.W.), and on Christmas Is., Lord Howe Is. and Norfolk Is. A cosmopolitan species that is widespread throughout tropical and temperate regions including North, Central and South America, Africa, southern and eastern Asia and Indonesia. In Australasia it also occurs in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, and the North Is. of New Zealand. | ||
