Thallus fruticose, straggling, forming wiry, tightly adnate mats up to 1 cm high and 12 cm wide, mostly dark olive-brown to blackish, paler at the base or in shaded parts of the thallus; attached to substratum by scattered, black, knob-like haptera. Branches terete, often rather unevenly so, much branched and entangled, glossy; main branches to c. 0.4 mm thick; ultimate branches c. 0.1 mm thick. Apothecia rare (none seen in Australian material), to 5.5 mm wide. Ascospores 7–12 × 6–8 µm. Pycnidia rare in Australian material, immersed. Conidia 5–7 × 1 µm (after Hawksworth, 1972). CHEMISTRY: medulla K-, C- and P-; no substances detectable by thin-layer chromatography. | ||
Occurs on rock in alpine and montane areas of southern W.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. Bipolar; in the Southern Hemisphere also recorded from Antarctica, New Zealand and southern South America. | ||
