| Thallus adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes often crowded, rounded but somewhat dissected, 4–8 mm wide, without lobules; margins entire, sinuous. Upper surface green-grey to pale grey, smooth, rugose centrally, shiny, without isidia; pseudocyphellae small, punctiform, most obvious near the margins, sometimes white-pruinose; soralia derived from pseudocyphellae, clustered centrally, sometimes marginal, punctiform to confluent; soredia farinose, white to grey-white. Lower surface black; rhizines dense, simple, ±fasciculate, black to brown. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 2–8 mm wide; disc imperforate, concave; thalline exciple pseudocyphellate, becoming sorediate. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, 15–18 × 12–15 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia unciform, 5–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ rose, KC+ rose, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, gyrophoric acid (major), ±orcinyl lecanorate and with or without unidentified fatty acids. | ||
| A relatively common but scattered species, on bark or rarely rock, in south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); a cosmopolitan species occurring on all continents. | ||
