Thallus foliose, adnate, to 9 cm wide. Lobes contiguous, imbricate, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously or subdichotomously branched, 1–3 mm wide; cilia moderately dense, tapering, only weakly inflated, to 1.5 mm long. Upper surface pale yellow-green, flat to convex, shiny, smooth, emaculate or faintly maculate; isidia sparse to moderately dense, cylindrical, erect or frequently procumbent, very rarely with a few lobules, simple, short (to 0.7 mm high); upper cortex strongly columnar. Lower surface black; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia rare, 1–2 mm wide; disc shallowly concave, cinnamon-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple ecoronate, isidiate, erhizinate. Ascospores subglobose, c. 5 × 4 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ pale yellow, C+ faint yellow-orange, P+ yellow; containing usnic acid, echinocarpic acid, conechinocarpic acid, unidentified compounds (traces) and ±atranorin. | ||
Scattered on bark of mangroves and other trees in coastal and drier hinterland areas of north Qld; rarely on rock in open forests. Also occurs in Japan, Taiwan, West Malaysia, Sabah, Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. | ||
