Thallus foliose, adnate, to 8 cm wide. Lobes contiguous centrally, separate at periphery, ±imbricate, linear-elongate, dichotomously branched, (0.5–) 1–2 mm wide, elobulate; cilia dense, conspicuous, tapering to markedly inflated basally, simple or rarely furcate-branched, to 1 mm long, black. Upper surface pale green to yellow-green, flat to convex, initially smooth; lobe apices shiny; older lobes extensively cracked; isidia sparse, globose to short cylindrical, simple, dark at apices. Lower surface brown; rhizines dense, elongate, sparingly furcate or squarrosely-branched, black. Apothecia rare, to 3 mm wide; disc shallowly concave then ±flat or slightly convex, dark brown; thalline exciple ecoronate, isidiate, retrorsely rhizinate. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 7–9 × 3.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia immersed, punctiform, minute. Conidia bifusiform, 7–9 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, hypostictic acid (minor), stictic acid (major), constictic acid (trace) and menegazziaic acid (minor). | ||
