Thallus foliose, adnate, to 4–8 cm wide. Lobes contiguous centrally to separate at periphery, not imbricate, linear-elongate, dichotomously to subdichotomously branched, 0.5–2 mm wide, without lobules; cilia dense, conspicuous, strongly inflated, to 1 mm long. Upper surface yellow-green, flat, smooth, shiny at lobe apices, emaculate, without isidia. Lower surface black; rhizines dense, simple, black. Apothecia common, 1–3 mm wide; disc ±flat or shallowly concave, cinnamon-brown; thalline exciple strongly coronate. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 7–8 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia common, flat to slightly emergent, punctiform, to 0.1 mm wide. Conidia bifusiform, 6–8 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (trace) and ±hyposalazinic acid (trace). | ||
Rare in Australia, where it is known only from the bark of mangroves on Hinchinbrook Is. and from Russell R., Qld. Ithas the broadest geographic range of any species in the genus, occuring in Taiwan, the Philippines, Sarawak, Brazil, Paraguay and the Comoro Is. | ||
