Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 3–6 cm wide. Lobes contiguous centrally to ±separate at periphery, imbricate, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously to subdichotomously branched, 0.5–2 mm wide; eciliate or with simple cilia. Upper surface flat to convex, shiny, emaculate, continuous; isidia sparse to dense, mainly simple, cylindrical, to 0.2 mm high. Lower surface pale brown to brown; rhizines moderately dense, simple to sparsely branched, tan. Apothecia rare, to 3 mm wide; disc ±flat or shallowly concave, cinnamon-brown; thalline exciple sparsely isidiate. Ascospores 5–6 × 3–4 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ yellow, P- or P+ pale orange; containing usnic acid, ±atranorin, barbatic acid (major), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (minor), ±echinocarpic acid (minor), ±conechinocarpic acid (trace), obtusatic acid (trace), ±3-a-hydroxybarbatic acid (trace) and ±norobtusatic acid (trace). | ||
This rare species occurs on rock or on bark of trees in coastal rainforests of northern W.A., N.T. and north Qld; also known from Thailand, where it grows on trees and rock in open deciduous forests. | ||
