  Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to c. 5 cm wide. Lobes loosely imbricate, flat, linear to sublinear-elongate, subdichotomously or digitately branched, 0.3–1 (–1.5) mm wide; marginal lobes slightly broader; apices of laciniae often subascending. Upper surface yellow-green, glossy, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia; lobe margins and apices blackened; isidia scattered, simple then gnarled and sparingly branched, apices epicorticate and becoming inflated and erupting, not sorediose. Medulla white. Lower surface dull, rugose, black; rhizines sparse, simple, robust, black. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia rarely developed. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ intense yellow; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid, connorstictic acid and ±salazinic acid (trace).
     
  On rock in dry subalpine areas of N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.; also on the South Is. of New Zealand (Otago).
