| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 6–8 cm wide. Lobes sparingly imbricate or not, flat, irregular, irregularly branched, 2–5 (–8) mm wide, elobulate; apices crenulate, ±round. Upper surface yellow-green, slightly shiny or dull, weakly maculate or not, becoming rugose and cracked, lacking isidia and soredia; lobe margins commonly blackened. Medulla white. Lower surface pale ivory to brown, darker towards apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple or very rarely sparingly branched, concolorous. Apothecia sessile, 2–5 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple involute becoming undulating and cracked. Ascospores 9–10 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bacilliform to sub-bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then deep red, C-, P+ intense yellow; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid and ±salazinic acid. | ||
| Scattered over pebbles on soil, or dry, well-drained rock surfaces, from subarid areas to areas of moderate rainfall in W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.; also on the South Is. of New Zealand (Otago, Canterbury). | ||
