Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 5–7 cm wide. Lobes moderately to sparingly imbricate, flat, linear-elongate, dichotomously to subdichotomously branched, often irregularly widened and constricted, 0.4–1.5 mm wide; not ascending at apices. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening with age, shiny, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins black. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, smooth, jet black, brown at lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, ±subapically grouped, simple, tufted or not, black. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–8 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then deep red, C-, P+ orange-red; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid (major) and consalazinic acid. | ||
Rare, endemic, restricted to the mountains of south-eastern Australia (N.S.W. and Vic.). Grows on rock. | ||
