| Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 4–7 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, radiating, flat, becoming subirregular, irregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; occasionally developing sublinear-elongate laciniae, 0.7–1.5 mm wide; apices of marginal lobes subrotund. Upper surface yellow-green, dull, emaculate, with transverse or irregular cracks, lacking soredia and isidia; becoming distinctly rugulose in older lobes. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to dark brown; rhizines moderately dense, simple, 0.3–0.5 mm long, yellow-brown to black. Apothecia sessile, 0.7–3.5 mm wide; disc concave then undulating, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, thick, involute, becoming thin and slightly lacerate. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ yellow, P-; containing usnic acid, barbatic acid (major), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid, dehydroconstipatic acid, ±constipatic acid (trace) and ±3-a-hydroxybarbatic acid (trace). | ||
| Relatively rare, scattered, occurs in eastern Australia (Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.), on exposed rock in subarid regions or areas of moderate rainfall; also in southern U.S.A. (Texas). | ||
