Thallus foliose, adnate, to 7 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, sublinear, irregularly branched, 0.5-1.5 mm wide, laciniate; laciniae imbricate, sublinear-elongate, subdi- or trichotomously branched, 0.3-0.7(-1.0) mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening with age, flat to slightly concave, emaculate, ±cracked, lacking isidia and soredia; lobe margins often blackened, particularly towards the apices. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, shiny, rugulose, black or brown-black in a broad marginal zone, brown to pale brown at the thallus centre; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, slender, simple or occasionally tufted, concolorous. Apothecia sessile, to 3 mm wide; disc concave, becoming flattened, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, thin, ±crenulate. Ascospores ellipsoid, 7-9 x 4.5-5.5 µm. Pycnidia common, immersed. Conidia bifusiform, 6-8 x 0.7 µm. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K-, medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ yellow-orange; containing usnic acid (minor), norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor/trace). | ||
This species appears to be scattered on rocks in the cooler areas of south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.). | ||
