Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 3–5 cm wide. Lobes barely imbricate, flat, linear-elongate, dichotomously but sparingly branched, 0.7–1.5 mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe apices often black-margined. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, rugose, jet black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, robust, black. Apothecia sessile, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, thick, involute, becoming thinner. Ascospores 7–8 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, stictic acid (major), constictic acid (minor), norstictic acid (minor) and cryptostictic acid (trace). | ||
Very rare, in cool temperate forests of southern N.S.W., A.C.T. and East Gippsland, Vic.; also in South Africa. Grows on rock. | ||
