| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 6–8 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, flat, sublinear to sublinear-elongate, dichotomously branched, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; ±subascending at apices. Upper surface greenish yellow, shiny, distinctly to effigurately maculate, smooth, without soredia and isidia; lobes often black-margined particularly towards apices. Medulla white. Lower surface rugulose or not, black; rhizines sparse, simple, robust, 0.3–1.5 mm long, black. Apothecia subpedicellate, 3–7 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple maculate, thick, entire and involute, becoming dentate and cracked. Ascospores 6–8 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ yellow, P-; containing usnic acid, barbatic acid (major) and 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (minor). | ||
| Very rare, in eucalypt woodland in southern tablelands of N.S.W., A.C.T. and W.A.; also in South Africa. Grows on rock. | ||
